150km from Saigon, Cat Tien National Park is bounded by the Dong Nai River to the east and the Ho Chi Minh Road to the west. From which it is accessible in 3-4 hours. Cat Tien National Park is a treasure trove of biodiversity and is home to one of the Ramsar wetland area only Vietnam (Bau Sau – Crocodile swamp). Here in the tropical forests of southern Vietnam live some of the world’s most endangered species. So The park, one of the largest in the country, was established in recognition of Cat Tien’s unique wildlife and the importance of protecting it.
The 72,000-hectare park is one of the outstanding natural treasures in Vietnam, and the hiking, mountain biking and birdwatching here are the best in the south of the country.
Fauna in the park includes 100 types of mammal including the bison-like guar, 79 types of reptile, 41 amphibian species, plus an incredible array of insects, including 400 or so butterfly species. Of the 350-plus birds, rare species include the orange-necked partridge and Siamese fireback.
The Park is varied and made up of seasonally flooding grassland and swamp forest. The wetland is bounded to the east, south and west by dense humid evergreen forest with semi-evergreen and deciduous forest in the park itself. To date, more than 1,610 plant species have been recorded, in 162 botanical families.

Note for you: Always call ahead for reservations as the park can accommodate only a limited number of visitors. However, a word of caution: visitors have to be really lucky to see any of the larger mammals resident in the park, so don’t come expecting to encounter tigers and elephants.
