The five below passes, with the dangerous ascents and beautiful landscapes, can leave both fears and admirations to travelers.
Although they are considered to be very dangerous and the haunting of drivers, but 5 passes still attracts many tourists because of their original and majestic beauty.
1. Pha Din Pass (Son La, Dien Bien provinces)
Locating in Ta Phin Plateau system, Pha Din Pass is considered as the boundary between the two provinces of Son La and Dien Bien with a total length of 32 km; and one of the “four great passes” of the Northwestern region of Vietnam.
The pass has very rugged terrain, a steep cliff sides, one side is deep chasms. Pass on halfway translucent clouds often obscure, passes beneath the village is sporadic. However, at the highest point of the pass, 1.648m, compared with the sea level, visitors can have unforgettable experiences of the grandeur of nature between “heaven and earth”.
2. O Quy Ho Pass – Lao Cai
With the length of 50km, O Quy Ho is absolutely a big challenge for every driver because of dangrous road, one side is steep cliff and the other side is deep abyss. However, if you get over your fear and climb to the peak of the pass (2.000m), you will have the chance to contemplate the whole scene of floating sky like in heaven. That is why it is called the sky gate.
3. Khau Pha Pass – Yen Bai
Khau Pha Pass is one of the most dangerous roads which crosses the highest mountain in Mu Cang Chai – Khau Pha Peak. It is very winding and steep, especially, this pass is more dangerous than ever on foggy days.
4. Ma Pi Leng Pass in Ha Giang Province
As a long stretch of road about 20 km with 1,200 meter altitude, Ma Pi Leng Pass is located in the Dong Van Geoparks which is recognized as the global geoparks. The Pass the “Happiness” road connecting Ha Giang, Dong Van and Meo Vac town, being famous for the “King” of the Vietnam’s pass or Great Wall of Vietnam or the Pyramid of the Meo.
Scenery in Ma Pi Leng pass is unique with majestic and wild beauty. Looking to the north and northeast, thousands of gray mountains concatenate to the horizon. Next to the road is abyss and the Nho Que River in the below. November 16th 2009, Ministry of Culture, Sport and tourism of Vietnam decided to classify Ma Pi Leng area as scenic relic of Vietnam.
The pass is well known for providing a clear winding road from the mountain to another mountain. This is probably the reason visitors are often called Ma Pi Leng is the king of the most dangerous stretch of road in Vietnam.
5. Ngoan Muc Pass – Ninh Thuan
Ngoan Muc Pass is 18,5 km and the average slope is over 9 degree. This pass runs along the steep ridge connected with Ninh Son valley and Lang Biang Steppe. As its name, Ngoan Muc Pass will conquer every tourists by its dangerous, majestic scene but also very poetic and romantic.
